Fortaleza San Felipe, also known as San Felipe Fortress, is one of the most important colonial military structures in the Dominican Republic and a top cultural attraction in Puerto Plata.


📜 History & Architecture

  • Built between 1564 and 1577 under King Philip II of Spain to defend the northern coast from pirates and rival European powers.
  • Designed with thick stone walls, a moat, and a strategic location—perfect for 16th-century maritime defense.
  • It is the oldest colonial military building on the Dominican Republic’s north coast.

⚔️ Historical Significance

  • Played a key role during the Battle of Puerto Plata Harbor (1800) when American forces briefly captured it during the Quasi-War.
  • Used as a prison for centuries—including political prisoners like national hero Juan Pablo Duarte and those imprisoned during the Trujillo dictatorship, such as the husbands of the Mirabal sisters.

  • Declared a museum in 1965 and reopened to the public in 1983 after restoration.
